MathJax - Beautiful Math in all Browsers

We have recently started making extensive use of MathJax, an open source display engine for rendering mathematics in web pages that seems to work well in all modern browsers.

It hasn't come a moment too soon, as to date we have usually had to resort to creating bitmap images for all equations, which has been far from satisfactory.

By entering LaTeX expressions in the HTML source code, we now get nicely rendered mathematical expressions. Here are a few examples for the metallurgists amongst you:
$$\sigma_\text{y}=\sigma_0 + k_\text{y} d^{-1/2}$$ $$D=D_0 \exp(–Q_\text{d}/RT)$$ $$X = 1 - \exp\Big[-0.693\Big({t \over t_{0.5}}\Big)^k\Big]$$

Work on Wikipedia "Brittleness" Article

We've been working to improve the "Brittleness" article on Wikipedia, since the previous definition wasn't so good. We've also added this image file to Wikimedia Commons to help differentiate between brittle and ductile behaviour.

CORE-Materials Repository Launched

The CORE-Materials repository has been launched offering browsing, accurate searching and guided navigation through nearly 1200 teaching and learning resources. The faceted search interface filters the titles, descriptions, classification and keywords for all resources. Extra filtering by license or resource type provides optimal results and improved searchability. The CORE-Materials repository provides a unique platform for downloading interactive Flash animations and for the sharing of videos.

Mothballing of Teesside Cast Products

A sad day for the UK steel industry with the mothballing of Teesside Cast Products in Redcar. I visited several times during my work on the steeluniversity project and was always impressed by the highly skilled and dedicated workforce there. We hope that a buyer for the plant can be found soon to ensure that the skills and experience are not lost.

JISC-CETIS 2009 Conference

MeLT attended the JISC-CETIS 2009 Conference in Birmingham and came back with plenty of good ideas to enhance the CORE-Materials project.

There was some useful stuff from Charles Duncan at Intrallect on the automatic generation of metadata from texts, which we think can help us reduce the time it takes to manually catalogue our resources. During the session, we also met John McNaught from the National Centre for Text Mining (NaCTeM), who also offered sage advice on the same subject.

Chris Clarke from Talis gave a very good overview on the use of machine-readable data to build linked open courseware.

We also learned from Russell Stannard from the University of Westminster about the successful use of social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter to 'broadcast' the release of new OER content to followers.

steeluniversity Challenge 2010

The next steeluniversity Challenge is to take place for 24 hours from 12:00 GMT on Wednesday 27 January 2010. As well as the guys at WorldSteel, we're working with Mick Steeper of Siemens VAI, Bill Timms of Corus and James Attree & Joe Dias of the Steel Construction Institute.
