7th steeluniversity Challenge Final

Today MeLT was in Brussels attending the grand final of the 7th WorldSteel steeluniversity challenge, having been responsible for developing and adapting the simulation software specially for the event.

Winners of Round 1 from industry and student categories attended from China, Taiwan, India, Slovenia, the UK, Brazil and Canada. The teams were challenged to make a cast of 'virtual' steel suitable for earth moving equipment to the correct specification and at minimum cost.

Congratulations to all who took part and especially to the winners:
  • Student champions: Andraž Bradeško and Anže Tekavčič, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia
  • Industry champions: Manjunathan Mohan and Chandra Prakash Sankar, Tata Steel Ltd., India

7th steeluniversity Challenge

The 7th annual steeluniversity Challenge is about the get underway at 12:00 GMT Tue 13 Nov 2012. This year, entrants are challenged to remelt scrap metal in the electric arc furnace to produce structural steel suitable for earth moving equipment.

Recrystallisation module published on steeluniversity.org

Over the past few months, MeLT has been developing a new interactive e-Learning module for steeluniversity.org entitled Recrystallization.

The module introduces the collective phenomena of recovery, recrystallization and grain growth that cause work-hardened metals to soften during annealing and other high temperatures treatments. The module includes interactive simulations of these processes. It also looks how thermomechanical treatments (TMT) have been developed to produce steels of superior strength and toughness.

In addition to these core topics, sections dealing with nucleation & growth, partial dislocations, stacking fault energy and cross-slip and crystallographic texture are also provided.

steeluniversity Challenge 2010

The next steeluniversity Challenge is to take place for 24 hours from 12:00 GMT on Wednesday 27 January 2010. As well as the guys at WorldSteel, we're working with Mick Steeper of Siemens VAI, Bill Timms of Corus and James Attree & Joe Dias of the Steel Construction Institute.

steeluniversity Challenge 2010
